Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, bears witness to a unique cultural phenomenon. A society of Polynesian origin that settled there c. A.D. 300 established a powerful, imaginative and original tradition of monumental sculpture and architecture, free from any external influence. From the 10th to the 16th century this society built shrines and erected enormous stone figures known as moai, which created an unrivalled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate people throughout the world.

Recommended excursion: Expedition activities with the Silversea expedition team
Explore Pitcairn, an island full of history and unique culture. Halfway between Peru and New Zealand, Pitcairn was the perfect hiding spot for the famed HMS Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives. See the spot where Fletcher Christian hid from his fellow outlaws. There is much to see, including the museum, the cemetery, the school and a chance to hike towards Fletcher Christian’s cave. Birders should be on the lookout for the endemic Pitcairn Reed Warbler, while stamp collectors may want to purchase a few of the coveted Pitcairn Island stamps to keep as reminders of their visit to this remote and storied island.

After a dry landing onto a concrete jetty with a few steps, you will be welcomed by the local community with the traditional performance. Afterwards, visit the Kamuihei archaeological site is dominated by a massive banyan tree. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Marquesas Islands, with paepae (stone platforms), tiki, me’ae (religious sites) and numerous petroglyphs etched into the rocks. It takes the best part of a day to explore this veritable open-air museum.

After a dry landing onto a concrete jetty with a few steps, you will be welcomed with ‘Mave Mai’, the traditional welcome to the Marquesas Islands. Watch wood carving and leaf weaving demonstrations, afterwards you can free roam through the village or join one of the offered hikes conducted by Silversea Expedition Team and is depending on the weather condition of the day. More specific information and logistics will be communicated by the Expedition Team on board.
