As a writer at Eurail, I’m used to narrating our travelers’ stories, but rarely my own. In my day-to-day work, I get to read a lot of messages from our community – sometimes full of gratitude the Pass made an unforgettable trip possible, while other times tinged with frustration, following a train disruption or another misfortune. Still, the outcome is usually the same: you get excited or sad reading through people’s experiences, but you always view them from a safe distance – that of the employee who knows the product inside out, yet has never used it himself. This, however, changed last month. It was a warm June evening when a few colleagues and I hopped on the night train in Utrecht, ready to start our rail journey to Austria. The trip was part of a familiarization program that allows employees to step into our travelers’ shoes and better understand what they experience daily. I’d always traveled to one place at a time, so naturally, I was expecting switching from city to city to be tiring. To my surprise, every train ride felt more exhilarating than the last: Innsbruck, with its timeless composure and sweeping Alpine views; Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace (Salzburgians will never let you forget it) and my favorite stop, with its baroque elegance and the serene Salzach river; and Vienna, with its grand architecture, world-class museums, and the fluffiest Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes). And then, almost too quickly, we were back home in Utrecht. The step off our last train was a heavy one, letting go of moments that now belonged elsewhere, but I’m grateful for what I experienced with my colleagues – and I’ll now be able to connect more with your stories, too. As I’m writing all this, with my Austrian postcards lying on the desk and a heart somehow still fueled by schnitzels, I can’t help but look forward to traveling with the Pass again. Until then, the team and I have created a community post where you can ask us anything you want about our time in Austria. See you there soon!
