It may seem a million miles away, but more and more people are choosing Costa Rica for their next big trip. It’s surprisingly affordable for such an exotic, far flung place, and the adventures you can have there are out of this world. Here’s a taste of what’s in store.
Wildlife safaris
Costa Rica is one of the world’s best destinations for seeing wildlife. More than half a million species flourish here, from giant anteaters and tiny hummingbirds to glossy toucans and toothy caimans, making it the most biodiverse place on earth. Wildlife enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with guided jungle walks (day and night), crocodile safaris, birdwatching tours and wildlife cruises among the most popular pursuits.
Jungle adventures
Although it’s less than half the size of England, Costa Rica has an incredible 27 national parks, 13 forest reserves and eight biological reserves. Roughly a quarter of the country is protected jungle, home to over 100 species of tree, and over 1,400 different orchids. Eco-lodge accommodation is popular, from where guests explore the rainforest on guided hikes, nature trails, jungle canopy walks and night safaris.
Cultural cities
San Jose is Costa Rica’s capital, and it’s the jumping off point for most tours into the country. It’s worth staying a couple of days though, to explore the lovely colonial centre, and learn about Costa Rica’s culture and history in the galleries and museums. There are several coffee plantations just outside the city where you can get a flavour of Costa Rica’s most famous export on tours and tastings.
Beaches and hot springs
Costa Rica isn’t just about wildlife spotting and rainforest walks. Away from the jungle, the landscapes range from volcanic peaks to palm-fringed beaches and relaxing hot springs, making it a fantastic all-round destination with something for everyone.
