Matariki is a cluster of stars that rises every year in late June/early July and heralds the Māori New Year in Aotearoa New Zealand.
It’s a sacred ritual and this year, as part of our Travel Project series, we were lucky enough to join Ngamako as she returned to her roots to lead her first ever Hautapu (a ritual where the stars are given a sacred offering).
