My name’s Ellie, and after 18 years working for Eurail (yes, eighteen), you could say I’m a seasoned traveler and basically part of the office furniture. I’m also one of the copywriters, so it’s nice to show my face and flex my ‘travel writer’ muscles for a change (though as a happy introvert, I usually prefer to blend into my surroundings) by reliving the story of my first solo adventure in Europe. I was born with a spirit of adventure in East Yorkshire, a charming part of England where “Ey up, chuck!” is the friendliest and most heartfelt greeting. To me, nothing compares to the untamed beauty of the English countryside, but I quickly realized that life on a tiny island couldn’t satisfy my wanderlust. I’ve been lucky enough to explore six continents, and if you ask me, traveling by train after the summer crowds go home is the best way to see Europe. But my lifelong love of adventure didn’t begin with comfortable train journeys and the convenience of a Eurail Pass. It began by frantically searching for a seasonal job after I graduated, which opened the door to extensive travels in France, Switzerland, and beyond. You don’t have to work your way around Europe as I did, but if you’re feeling inspired, you can follow the same route through the French and Swiss Alps all the way to Switzerland’s mountain villages. Handy tip: I paid full price for the boat trip in this photo, but with your Eurail Pass, you don’t have to. Check out our benefit partners in Switzerland here. |
