Celebrating World Bee Day
In recognition of World Bee Day, we’re excited to share the latest Explore Foundation project with you and tell you how native bees are helping human-wildlife coexistence in Tanzania.

Explore Foundation’s charity partner How Many Elephants are building beehive fences in the Ngorongoro-Serengeti Ecosystem, to stop African elephants from destroying vital farmland and to eliminate animal-human conflict in the local villages.

Incredibly, elephants are afraid of bees. So in building carefully-placed beehive fences, How Many Elephants are able to prevent elephants from venturing away from their safe corridors and into farmland or villages. What’s more, the bees are busily making delicious honey that a local women’s cooperative is able to harvest, process and sell.

Saved by the bee: a win-win in Tanzania
Farmers in Tanzania have a problem: wild elephants raiding their crops. A remarkable solution to this problem exists in the form of ‘bee corridors’ – an ingenious solution to steer the elephants harmlessly away. The elephants are afraid of the bees, so avoid them – creating a simple, eco-friendly natural barrier. Plus, farmers can sell the honey for an extra stream of income – literally everybody wins.

The Explore Foundation has donated £5,000 already to this project, and is hoping to raise another £5,000 for beehive wire fences in the Ngorongoro-Serengeti Ecosystem. Your donations will help continue this excellent work.
