Dear ,
Tucked on a south-facing plateau high in the Alps, Alpe d’Huez is the biggest resort in the Grand Domaine ski area and features almost 250km of sunny slopes, suitable for any level of skiing. Nicknamed the ‘Island in the Sun,’ Alpe d’Huez benefits from 300 days of sun, but if bad weather is keeping you off the slopes or skiing just isn’t for you, the resort offers a wide range of non-skiing activities to enjoy and a lively après-ski scene.
Discover our top five reasons to ski in Alpe d’Huez this winter.
1) Extensive Ski Area – Alpe d’Huez boasts over 250 km of ski slopes, offering a variety of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels with a diverse mix of green, blue, red, and black runs. The resort is famous for La Sarenne, the longest black piste in Europe, as well as “Le Tunnel”, a mythically steep and challenging black, located at the end of a tunnel through the mountainside. But don’t worry, for less experienced skiers, there really is something for all abilities.
2) Excellent Snow Conditions – Alpe d’Huez is renowned for its reliable snow conditions, largely due to its high altitude, with the resort base sitting at 1,860 meters and its highest peak, the Pic Blanc, reaching 3,330 meters. Many of the slopes are located above 2,000 meters, where the temperature remains cooler, preserving the quality of the snow throughout the season, even in warmer periods.
3) Sunshine – Nicknamed “Island in the Sun”, the resort boasts around 300 days of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest ski destinations in the Alps. Skiing in bright sunlight means warmer, more comfortable temperatures throughout the day, even during the colder winter months.
4) Lively Après-Ski – Alpe d’Huez offers a vibrant après-ski scene with numerous bars, restaurants and entertainment options. Venues like La Folie Douce provide exciting open-air parties on the slopes. In the village, there are numerous bars and pubs, popular spots for drinks, live music and themed nights.
5) Short Airport Transfers – Alpe d’Huez is just about 90 minutes drive from Grenoble airport, and two hours from Lyon and Chambery airports. This makes the resort appealing also for short breaks, allowing skiers to spend more time on the slopes without the hassle of lengthy transfers.
