“We’ve just returned from an unforgettable journey on the Mekong with AmaWaterways aboard the stunning AmaDara! Our adventure took us through the heart of Vietnam and Cambodia, where we soaked in breathtaking sights and immersed ourselves in vibrant local culture. From magical sunrises to picturesque sunsets, every moment was a feast for the senses, and we’re excited to relive these memories as we take you through our journey today.
The start of our journey took us to Ho Chi Minh City, where we enjoyed a luxury pre-cruise hotel stay to immerse ourselves in the city before we boarded the ship. We kicked things off at the War Remnants Museum and marvelled at the stunning architecture of the Central Post Office, a beautiful blend of French colonial design and local culture, before indulging in lunch at the iconic Rex Hotel, savouring traditional dishes in a luxurious setting. This city is a treasure trove of history and culture and was the perfect way to start our Southeast Asia adventure!”

“Upon arrival, we were so excited to embark the ship and you could definitely feel a buzz from our fellow passengers. AmaDara is a fairly small ship with a maximum of 124 guests, so there’s an intimate onboard atmosphere as you’re accompanied by like-minded travellers and thoroughly looked after by the staff. From the public spaces to the accommodation, everywhere is beautifully decorated with richly carved wood furnishings and regional artefacts. We stayed in a French Balcony Stateroom, which was bright and spacious with plenty of storage and a large bathroom.

Our first morning, I woke up early to catch a stunning sunrise, while Christina joined a yoga session on deck and it was such a peaceful and wonderful experience to be on this beautiful river, soaking in the sights and sounds around us.
At our first stop along the Mekong, we explored Tan Chau and Evergreen Island, where we met a local who shared his remarkable story of resilience after being shot during the Vietnam War and having his home burned down by the Khmer Rouge. It was such a powerful experience. Later, we hopped on a trishaw ride to visit silk and rattan workshops, where we couldn’t resist picking up some beautiful silk pieces. Once we were back on board, we began sailing towards Cambodia, both of us feeling extremely grateful for these unforgettable moments and the rich culture we discovered along the Mekong.”

“Arriving in Phnom Penh was a true feast for the senses. We explored the stunning Royal Palace, where the intricate architecture and vibrant gardens took our breath away. One highlight was the Silver Pagoda, an incredible gem adorned with over 5,000 silver tiles that shimmer under the sun. After soaking in the royal history, we headed to the bustling market, where the aroma of street food and colourful crafts filled the air. A perfect blend of culture and local life!
We took part in an unforgettable excursion that took us on an enchanting ox and cart ride through the picturesque countryside of Kampong Tralach. The lush landscapes and charming villages truly showcased the heart of rural Cambodia. Next, we journeyed to Oudong, the ancient capital of Cambodia, where we explored the stunning Oudong Temple, known for its historical significance and breathtaking views. As we wandered through the peaceful grounds, we were honoured to participate in a beautiful Buddhist blessing ceremony led by the monks. The experience was both humbling and uplifting, enveloped in an aura of spirituality and tranquility.”

“The next day began at Chong Koh Ouknhatey Primary School, where we met the beautiful children, who were so eager to learn. Their bright smiles and enthusiasm for English was really inspiring. We spent time sharing stories and helping them with their lessons, a wonderful experience that reminded us of the power of education and connection.
Next, we ventured to Silk Island, a hidden gem known for its rich tradition of silk weaving. Watching the intricate process of silk-making was fascinating; we saw the artisans at work, transforming silk threads into stunning fabrics. We couldn’t resist purchasing a few beautiful items to bring home as souvenirs, each piece a testament to the incredible craftsmanship.”

“Our final evening on board AmaDara took us to the magnificent Angkor Wat for sunset. This iconic temple complex is a testament to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II. Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, Angkor Wat later transformed into a Buddhist temple, reflecting the region’s spiritual evolution. Its stunning architecture features intricate bas-reliefs and towering spires that captivate visitors from around the world.
As the sun set, the temple was bathed in a golden glow, highlighting the intricate carvings and expansive moat that surrounds this architectural wonder. It’s awe-inspiring to think that this was once the heart of the Khmer Empire, a city full of life and culture.”

“When it came time to disembark, we were sad to say goodbye to the wonderful staff and our lovely fellow passengers but felt extremely grateful and enriched by the whole experience. The memories made on this trip will definitely be engrained in our minds forever and we couldn’t recommend making this magnificent journey enough!”
