After the chaos of Christmas, why not curl up with a cuppa and start planning your next adventure? Travel in spring and you could be jetting off in a few months’ time, beating the summer crowds to places like the USA and Canada, or immersing yourself in culture and colour somewhere like India or Japan. For inspiration, here’s some of our favourite long-haul destinations in spring.

USA

It’s not just Japan that has a cherry blossom season. New York’s Central Park is bathed in pink blossoms in spring, or visit the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC. California’s deserts are ablaze with wildflowers, from blazing orange poppies to cool blue lupins and in Arizona and New Mexico you may even see the iconic saguaros cacti in bloom.

Canada

Canada is big on the great outdoors so spring is a good time to visit, as new life and colour emerge fresh and fragrant after the winter snow. Wildlife is abundant, from whales and seabirds to caribou and bear. The city of Ottawa hosts the Canadian Tulip Festival each May, said to be the largest of its kind in the world.

Africa

For seasonal colour of a different kind, head south of the Equator. Spring in the UK is autumn in South Africa, and it’s a good time for game viewing or catching the annual grape harvest in the Cape Town winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. March is also a good time to see Victoria Falls in full flow – the spray is visible from 30 miles away!

Asia

One of Asia’s signature spring sights is ‘sakura’ – cherry blossom season in Japan. In China, fruit trees are in full bloom and countries like Vietnam and Cambodia are pleasantly warm during the day, perfect for trekking and bicycle tours. Sri Lanka’s tea plantations and strawberry farms are especially colourful and aromatic at this time of year.

India

Spring is a good time for spotting wildlife in places like Ranthambore National Park, or travel to the foothills of the Himalaya to see the hills and forests around Shimla verdant green and speckled with wildflowers. Kerala in Southern India is a haven of lush tranquillity in spring, and in Darjeeling you can see wild rhododendrons and magnolias in bloom.
