The jewel in Croatia’s crown…
With more than its fair share of history and attractions as well as, arguably, the best city walls in the world, Byron once referred to the city as the ‘pearl of the Adriatic’. Backed by rugged mountains and jutting out into the sea, it is one of the world’s finest and best-preserved fortified cities and now Croatia’s most upmarket and glamorous destination.
Below is a list of recommendations for outings in this splendid region of Croatia.
Keep an eye out for our next Croatian feature, where we’ll be exploring Istria.

Considered one of the most spectacular bays on the coast of Dubrovnik and, moreover, a true natural beauty in Croatia. This fascinating pebble beach is located only a short distance from the old town and enchants with a breath-taking, almost kitschy picture book backdrop. With turquoise sea colours, light fine pebbles surrounded by an imposing rocky landscape, it’s perfect to enjoy some quiet beach days.

There are many wineries in the area offering excellent local wines to try. The most famous grape in the region is the Malvasia which is a Konavle indigenous variety. Generally, it gives fresh, mineral, and fruity wines. Winemakers use it for both still and sparkling wines. A well chilled glass of Malvasia makes an excellent aperitif and is an ideal match for summer dishes such as grilled fish fillets, oysters, risottos, and pasta.

A visit to Trsteno, just north of Dubrovnik, is worthwhile to view the remarkable Arboretum established there about 500 years ago. It is said that seafarers and merchants from here were encouraged to bring back plants, saplings and seeds from their worldwide travels to be planted in this botanic garden which of course have established themselves over the centuries. The entrance to the Arboretum is guarded by a huge 500 year old plane tree.

CROSS THE BORDER INTO MONTENEGRO
|
Drive East and over the Croatia-Montenegro border and discover Herceg Novi, a beautiful coastal town dating from the 15th Century. Stop here and have a spot of lunch and relax on the beach… or… carry on slightly further and explore the towns and spectacular views of the Bay of Kotor where there is a variety of smaller beaches.
|
SOAK UP THE KRAVICA WATERFALLS
|
Take a day and visit the Kravica Waterfalls just over the border from Croatia in Herzegovina. These 25m falls cascade into turquoise blue waters over rocks and lusciously green trees, where visitors can paddle and swim and enjoy the incredible scenery. The natural pool is not very deep so it is ideal for little ones, but the crashing falls and the deeper water closer to the rocks also make for a great natural playground for adults.

WALK THE CITY WALLS OF DUBROVNIK
|
Make a day trip to Dubrovnik… Of course, there is much to choose to do here but a walk around the old town walls is highly recommended to get a feel for the old city, for orientating yourself in the town and for some wonderful views (charge payable). Please note that parking spaces are at a premium, so we recommend you arrive early in the town and make a day of it.

You are never very far away from the sea and a host of water based options allow a unique viewpoint of the coastline from the intoxicating blue of the Adriatic sea. Many boat trips are offered from the promenade in Cavtat allowing a spectacular first view of Dubrovnik Old Town and its city walls. Kayaking trips lave from the small port of Pile and will reward you with magnificent sunsets over the Elafiti Islands on your return. Alternatively, engage in conversation with the local fishermen in Molunat and they may offer for to take you on their next fishing trip.
