It was one of the six principal cities of Lycia and it is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Turkey and has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Of note are the pillar tombs (unique to Lycia) and the Harpy column tomb with frieze. The ‘Harpy Tomb’ is so called as it was believed that the winged women figures in the frieze were harpies – monsters from Greek mythology with the head of a woman and the body of a bird.

The Greek island of Meis (Kastellorizo) is just off the coast from Kas and takes approximately 30 minutes to get to via a ferry that runs once a day. With a permanent population of around 500 this is a quaint small island to visit and an easy day trip.
If you feel like a little uphill exploring, head out of the harbour on the footpath next to where the ferry docks and go up into the hills. From here you will gain some stunning views for brilliant photographs, as well as be able to visit the 14th-century castle ruins.

Explore the Saklikent Gorge

The word Saklikent in Turkish means “hidden city”, with the rivers bubbling and flowing you can hear the vibrant sounds of a hidden natural city, the bird song echoing around and the wind rustling in the trees.
The gorge is striking for its pristine beauty, nestled in a forest of red pine, the flora grows in what looks to be the most inaccessible places and there is a river flowing with incredible speed which runs part of the way through it. Even in the summer, the water is as cold as ice. The high cliffs of Saklikent Canyon shelter the floor of almost all natural sunlight.
Outside the gorge are many restaurants on the water, with seating going out and the water flowing underneath you, it is a great place to spend the day.

The Patara area is a national park, a key biodiversity area and is rich in birdlife.

Patara holds fame for several reasons; the first being that the beach is the longest in Turkey, and ranges from 11km to 18 km depending on what you read, whatever the true length, it is a beach of white sand and dunes. Should you wish to visit the beach then you will be visiting where the loggerhead sea turtles also go to lay their eggs. This is a protected beach and the nests are marked clearly so you can give them space when you are finding that perfect spot to place your towel.
