Do you know the National Sport of the UK?

It’s Cricket
Ok wait, what is a national sport, and how is it decided?

A national sport is a sport or game that is considered to be an intrinsic part of the culture of a country or nation.

There are various components when picking a national sport, including historical significance, popularity, and participation and international success. Different countries have different national sports depending on these factors, and in the spirit of this sporty summer, here are three of our top trips and their top sports.

Enough talk, book now!

 Mexico – Charrería
Charrería is a Mexican cultural tradition that stems from the Spanish-inspired charreada, and began in the 16th century when horses were introduced by the Spanish. What initially began as a traditional practice of herding cattle, has transformed into the national sport of Mexico. The sport includes various equestrian activities like attempting to leap from one horse to another, and trying to stay on the horse (without reins) until it stops bucking. Good to know, but we think we’ll stick to the beaches in Mexico.

Australia – Cricket
Cricket has been played in Australia for over 210 years, and its origins can be dated back to the 16th century in the South-Eastern parts of England. Englishmen brought Cricket to the British Commonwealth countries, and has since become the most popular summer sport in Australia at international, domestic and local levels. According to official audience data, 93.6% of Australians have watched at least some cricket on TV in their lifetime!

Let’s go down under!

Italy – Football
Football actually originated in Britain in the 19th century, and the modern variation of the game was brought to Italy during the 1880s. Edoardo Bosio, a worker in the British textile industry, had visited England and played the game. He returned to Turin in 1887 and helped spread football in his homeland, subsequently helping the country become one of the best (if we don’t count this year’s Euros) in the world at the sport.
