Palazzo Petrvs
Orvieto, Italy
Thanks to meticulous effort, an abandoned 16th-century palazzo in Orvieto has been brought back to life as Palazzo Petrvs. Behind its carved stone doorways lie frescoes uncovered beneath centuries of plaster, and coffered ceilings restored by hand. The restaurant, in a deconsecrated church, is nothing less than theatrical.

Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville
Canapville, France
Les Manoirs is an elegant 16th-century estate converted into a luxurious boutique hotel. A collection of smartly renovated cottages frame a historic manor house with its original stone fireplace, and the surrounding park, with its old well, reflecting pond, vegetable gardens, and apple trees, is wildly picturesque.

Santa Casa
Mexico City, Mexico
Tucked away on a quiet block in Roma Norte, Santa Casa is a boutique hotel steeped in local character. Behind a quaint stucco facade with a curved parapet, this restored 1930s Mexican Colonial Revival-style house features Baroque spiral columns and high arched windows that let in abundant natural light.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge
Hunter, NY, USA
Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, which dates from 1966, was originally the passion project of an artist owner intent on creating a playful getaway. After extensive restorations it still has some retro charm, but the aesthetic and amenities are distinctly 21st-century: these 38 guest rooms feel more like urban lofts than cabins.

SHISHI-IWA-HOUSE
Karuizawa, Japan
Shishi-Iwa-House is not one house but a collection of them, three and counting, by two of Japan’s finest modern architects: Pritzker winners Shigeru Ban and Ryue Nishizawa. In an idyllic location an hour from Tokyo, the three houses are divided into stunning, quietly luxurious guest rooms in both Western and tatami styles.

River Lodge
Paso Robles, CA, USA
The old ranch town of Paso Robles, once a nondescript exit off Highway 101 on the trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles, has emerged as an up-and-coming wine country destination with hotels and restaurants to match. River Lodge, originally a 1940s-era motor lodge, is one of the standouts.
