Palazzo Petrvs

Orvieto, Italy

Thanks to meticulous effort, an abandoned 16th-century palazzo in Orvieto has been brought back to life as Palazzo Petrvs. Behind its carved stone doorways lie frescoes uncovered beneath centuries of plaster, and coffered ceilings restored by hand. The restaurant, in a deconsecrated church, is nothing less than theatrical.

After extensive restorations it still has some retro charm, but the aesthetic and amenities are distinctly 21st-century: these 38 guest rooms feel more like urban lofts than cabins.

River Lodge

Paso Robles, CA, USA

The old ranch town of Paso Robles, once a nondescript exit off Highway 101 on the trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles, has emerged as an up-and-coming wine country destination with hotels and restaurants to match. River Lodge, originally a 1940s-era motor lodge, is one of the standouts.
