Want to drink less and live more? You’re not alone. According to a recent NCS poll, nearly 50% of millennials plan to cut down on booze this year, as the sober-curious movement gains pace around the world.

What was once seen as a drastic choice for those in the “last-chance saloon” is now mainstream and adaptable. People are choosing to reduce their alcohol intake for a variety of reasons, from wanting more energy to seeking to be fully present in their lives

Whatever the motivation, solo travel can be an excellent way to reset your relationship with booze – which is why we’ve launched our first ever collection of Alcohol-Free Adventures kicking off in January. With departures to Bali, Iceland and Puerto Rico, these special-edition escapes are big on memories and happy hours. They feature all the usual Flash Pack hallmarks of cultural immersion, adventure, and meaningful connection; with zero hangovers to boot.

The booze-free Bali trip has an extra twist, as it’s hosted by legendary celeb sober coach, Bob Marier. This means you’ll get to explore the Island of the Gods alongside Bob, while picking up some of his wisdom learnt over 20 years of sobriety and client interventions.

So – whether you’re planning to give up for good, or simply drink less for a while, come learn more about the joys of sober travel, below…

“The freedom that comes with solo travel is the antithesis of getting loaded,” says sober coach and Flash Pack Bali host, Bob Marier. “I spent almost 25 years of my life addicted to alcohol, and I started early – at 14 years old. During that time, drinking came first to everything else.

“I got sober in 2004, and over the past 20 years, I’ve traveled alone everywhere from Istanbul to India and the Middle East. When I lead Flash Pack’s alcohol-free trip to Bali next year, I know that our group will share some deep conversations. There’ll be people who’ll say to me, ‘I don’t know why I’m telling you this.’ But they’ll confide all the same, because I’ll help them feel safe and heard. Whoever turns up, I’ll be ready to support them with a good attitude.”

“For as long as I can remember, travel for me has been synonymous with drinking,” says US writer and journalist, Maggie Downs. “Backpacking brought me to raucous hostel parties where beer never stopped flowing. Brunch meant downing bottomless mimosas. But then I realised that my relationship with alcohol was no longer serving me. In fact, it was holding me back from accomplishing the things I wanted out of life.

“Someone once told me that sober sunsets lead to sober sunrises and I now carry that with me like a mantra. Waking up without a hangover is the best. It means enjoying breakfast in a new place with a great view and a clear head. I also like to plan things for the morning: early yoga classes, city walks or tours that help me enjoy a location before most people are out of bed – it feels like a reward.”

“I don’t remember much of my first hike after giving up alcohol,” says adventurer Harrison Ward, founder of UK-based brand, Fell Foodie. “It was long and difficult, I was going through withdrawal and pining for my ex. I was also desperate for a cigarette (I’d given up smoking, as well as alcohol). Yet, when we eventually reached the summit, it was this glorious blue-sky day with the Pennines in the background.

“It started a cycle: I went on to hike up Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and then Snowden, and I just kept going. I’d never understood the appeal of hiking before, but suddenly I got it. The endorphin hit that came from pushing my limits was similar to boozing but without any of the downsides. Hiking for five or six hours a day filled the gap that drinking left. As I continued with my journey into sobriety, my lethargy fell away and I became more motivated and energized.”
