And in terms of what else you see, it feels like there’s pretty much everything. There are 37 volcanoes, and some of them are huge active volcanoes spurting out plumes of smoke. There’s a colonial charm with pretty architecture and just incredible landscapes. The locals call Lake Atitlán “God Boasting” because of how beautiful it looks – it’s so blue, from the sky to the water. And the sunsets there are even more spectacular. Then there’s the Peten region, which was one of my highlights. Driving into the park and seeing signs for jaguars, ocelots, and tapirs made me feel like I was really immersed in the jungle.
Handily, it’s also cheaper than its neighboring countries, like Mexico and Belize, and you get so much for the money that you do spend – boutique hotels, delicious food, and really lovely, memorable conversations with craftspeople and communities.
