If you’re mulling over whether to book that dream trip or not, here’s another very good reason to do so. Not only does travel make you happier and calmer – but academics now believe it can make you younger too.

A new Australian study, published in the Journal of Travel Research, found that certain key aspects of travelling – including embracing new experiences, getting better sleep and forging social connections – can help slow the ageing process in your brain.

“Travel might be the best way to defy premature ageing,” says Fangli Hu, the study’s author and a PhD candidate at Edith Cowan University, near Perth. Her argument – based on the theory of entropy (which is the trend of everything moving towards death and disorder) – is that new surroundings, new friendships, and new adventures trigger systems in your body that promote health. In other words, you naturally respond to fresh stimuli by releasing healing hormones – which have the knock-on effect of delaying external signs of ageing.

And that’s not all. According to Hu’s research, certain trips work better than others. The dream ticket, if you want to come home looking as young as possible, is a holiday that involves light exercise (think walking or cycling) in a destination that is entirely new to you, while forging as many new connections as possible.
